There’s no question that today’s pace demands the instantaneous speed of the public cloud. Today demands frictionless self-service and the independence to act on demand. Today is automatic, agile, and calculated with data.
But, as it turns out, it is really hard to be automated, agile, and data driven with existing rigid infrastructures and processes. These transformations can only unfold with time and vision. And by the time we catch up to today’s demands, tomorrow’s demands are even steeper and are already lining up at the door.
No matter where you are on your cloud journey, NetApp is ready to help you embrace the cloud, whether it’s public, private, or (more likely) a hybrid mix that includes your on-premises IT environment. With the NetApp® Data Fabric, your data can flow seamlessly between these clouds—public and private, on and off premises—bridging the gap between today’s infrastructure and tomorrow’s vision for your data.
Less than a year ago, we introduced NetApp SnapMirror® support for Element software, enabling data replication across the Data Fabric. The subsequent release of NetApp Element® 10.3 provided data migration across the Data Fabric. And now, the Data Fabric bridges your private cloud infrastructure and the public cloud through SnapMirror replication between Element software and NetApp ONTAP® software, helping you realize the power of data fluidity.
Today, the NetApp Data Fabric uses SnapMirror to increase data mobility between Element 11.0 and ONTAP 9.5 software. SnapMirror, a mature technology that offers block-level data replication and a rich feature set, can migrate volumes from NetApp HCI and NetApp SolidFire® infrastructures to NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP. This technology provides more opportunity for data protection and security, data access and control, and data visibility and insights at “home,” in your on-premises cloud, and in the public cloud.
SnapMirror enables four use cases across the Data Fabric:
- Disaster recovery. Disaster recovery is a SnapMirror specialty. With NetApp HCI or SolidFire as the source and ONTAP as the target, you can realize the everyday advantages of Element with cost-effective backup and usage of existing infrastructure. SnapMirror also enables remote office or branch office (ROBO) replication use cases for NetApp HCI back to the data center.
- Data analytics. With cloned volumes from ONTAP, you can run databases, testing/development, or analytics on premises or in the cloud.
- Remote backup. Mount NetApp Snapshot copies from ONTAP and back with third-party backup software, such as Veeam and Commvault.
- Data migration. Clone volumes and send them to any Data Fabric endpoint as an alternative to VMware vMotion if you are setting up a new cloud.
Whether you are using the public cloud to innovate—building private clouds to create applications and services—or modernizing with cloud-connected flash, the NetApp hybrid, multicloud experience is possible with the Data Fabric. Start bridging your transformation to tomorrow so your business can thrive with data, whenever and wherever that might be.
Are you ready to see the Data Fabric in action? Watch how simple it is to set up a relationship between Cloud Volumes ONTAP and Element on NetApp HCI.
