  Today we are announcing support for Istio with Rancher 2.3 in Preview mode. Why Istio? Istio (or Service Mesh generally) has developed a huge amount of excitement in the Kubernetes eco-system. With its promise of adding fault tolerance, canary rollouts, A/B testing, monitoring and metrics, tracing and observability and authentication and authorization, Istio eliminates the need for developers to instrument or write specific code to enable these capabilities. A concern for many administrators setting up a multi-tenant Kubernetes cluster is how to prevent a co-tenant from becoming a “noisy neighbor,” one who monopolizes CPU, memory, storage and other resources.   Introduction Kubernetes clusters use multiple certificates to provide both encryption of traffic to the Kubernetes components as well as authentication of these requests. These certificates are auto-generated for clusters launched by Rancher and also clusters launched by the Rancher Kubernetes Engine (RKE) CLI. In Rancher v2.0.x and v2.1.x, the auto-generated certificates for Rancher-launched Kubernetes clusters have a validity period of one year, meaning these certificates will expire one year after the cluster is provisioned.

Now that Microsoft has announced the general availability of containers in Windows Server 2019 with Kubernetes 1.14, we have upgraded Rancher to both support the latest version of Windows containers (and Kubernetes) and after the preview is over, make it generally available.

  Today we launched a new open source project called k3OS. K3OS is a Linux distro built for the sole purpose of running Kubernetes clusters. In fact, it is a Linux distro and the k3s Kubernetes distro in one! As soon as you boot up a k3OS node, you have Kubernetes up and running. When you boot up multiple k3OS nodes, they form a Kubernetes cluster. K3OS is perhaps the easiest way to stand up Kubernetes clusters on any server.
