  Docker Achieves FIPS 140-2 Validation

  We are excited to share that we have achieved formal FIPS 140-2 validation (Certificate #3304) from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for our Docker Enterprise Edition Crypto Library. With this validation and industry-recognized seal of approval for cryptographic modules, we are able to further deliver on the fundamental confidentiality, integrity and availability objectives of information security and provide our commercial customers with a validated and secure platform for their applications. As required by the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) and other regulatory technology frameworks like HIPAA and PCI, FIPS 140-2 is an important validation mechanism for protecting the sensitivity and privacy of information in mission-critical systems.

  As we highlighted in a previous blog post, Docker Engine – Enterprise version 18.03 and above includes this now-validated crypto module. This module has been validated at FIPS 140-2 Level 1. The formal Docker Enterprise Edition Crypto Library’s Security Policy calls out the specific security functions in Docker Engine – Enterprise supported by this module and includes the following:

  • ID hashes
  • Swarm Mode distributed state store and Raft log (securely stores Docker Secrets and Docker Configs)
  • Swarm Mode overlay networks (control plane only)
  • Swarm Mode mutual TLS implementation
  • Docker daemon socket TLS binding

  Activating the FIPS mode of operation in Docker Engine – Enterprise is as easy as enabling FIPS Mode on the underlying host operating system and restarting the Engine (if it’s already running). Docker Engine – Enterprise’s FIPS mode can also be explicitly activated by prepending the DOCKER_FIPS=1 environment variable to your commands. Furthermore, FIPS mode can be enabled in the next Docker Enterprise release, thus providing a secure foundation for the management and registry services in addition to the application cluster.

  Behind the scenes, Docker Engine – Enterprise leverages a proprietary switching library to swap the crypto module used for functions when FIPS mode is enabled, as shown by the figure below.

  

  We are continuing to work to incorporate this FIPS 140-2 validated module into the remainder of the Docker Enterprise container platform so stay tuned for updates.

  We recently hosted IDC research manager Gary Chen as a guest speaker on a webinar where he shared results from a recent IDC survey on container and container platform adoption in the enterprise. IDC data shows that more organizations are deploying applications into production using containers, driving the need for container platforms like Docker Enterprise that integrate broad management capabilities including orchestration, security and access controls.

  The audience asked a lot of great questions about both the IDC data and containerizing production applications. We picked the top questions from the webinar and recapped them here.

  Top Questions from the Webinar

  Q: What are the IDC stats based on?

  A: IDC ran a survey of 300+ container deployers from companies with more than 1,000 employees and have primary responsibility for container infrastructure in the US and modeled it from a variety of data sources they collect about the industry. 

  Q: IDC mentioned that 54% of containerized applications are traditional apps. Is there is simple ‘test’ to see if an app can be containerized easily?

  A: Docker works with many organizations to assess and categorize their application portfolios based on the type of app, their dependencies, and their deployment characteristics. Standalone, stateless apps such as load balancers, web, PHP, and JEE WAR apps are generally the easiest applications to containerize. Stateful and clustered apps are also candidates for containerization, but may require more preparation.

  Q: How do we containerize applications that are already in production?

  A: Docker has created a set of tools and services that help organizations containerize existing applications at scale. We help assess and analyze your application portfolio, and have the tools to automate application discovery and conversion to containers and a methodology to help integrate them into your existing software pipelines and infrastructure.   Q: How do we decide whether to use Swarm or Kubernetes for orchestration of applications in production?

  A: It comes down to the type of application and your organization’s preferences. The best part of Docker Enterprise is that you can use either orchestrator within a single platform so your workflows and UI are consistent. Your application can be defined in Compose files or Kubernetes YAML files. Additionally, you can choose to deploy a Compose file to Swarm or Kubernetes within Docker Enterprise.

  Q: How can containers be checked for vulnerabilities?

  A: Containers are based on an image file. Vulnerability scanning in Docker Enterprise does a binary level scan on each layer of the image file, identifies the software components in each layer and compares it against the NIST CVE database. You can find more details here.

  Q: We’re exploring different cloud-based Kubernetes services. Why should we look at Docker Enterprise?

  A: The value of the Docker Enterprise platform’s integrated management and security goes well beyond a commercially-supported Kubernetes distribution. Specifically Docker Enterprise allows you to leverage these capabilities consistently regardless of the cloud provider.

  With Docker Enterprise, you get an integrated advanced image registry solution that includes vulnerability scanning, registry mirroring and caching for distributed development teams, and  policy-based image promotions for scalable operations. We also provide integrated operations capabilities around Kubernetes – simplifying things like setting up teams, defining roles and access controls, integrating LDAP, creating client certificates, and monitoring health. Docker Enterprise makes the detailed configurations of Kubernetes quick and easy to get started and use.

  In this review, we’re looking at solutions to monitor Docker containers. Docker enables developers to iterate faster with software architectures consisting of many microservices. This poses a challenge to traditional monitoring solutions as the target processes are no longer statically allocated or tied to particular hosts.   We wanted to check back in with DockerCon Europe 2017 scholarship recipient, Roshan Gautam, and hear how attending DockerCon Europe has impacted his life. In Roshan’s words:

  DockerCon Experience

  Ever since I learned about Docker from a senior friend of mine back in early 2017, I got super excited about this technology and I started learning Docker. I enjoyed using Docker so much that I applied for a campus ambassador program and started a community on my campus.** One day, a of the member of campus community mentioned the scholarship program for DockerCon EU 2017. I applied for the scholarship and cheers to my luck, I got it.

  At DockerCon, I had a really wonderful time listening to the speakers, meeting with new people with similar mindset and of course having nice healthy food. “Guidance, Mentoring, Caring” – These are the words I want to use for the amazing organizers of the conference. Along with attending the high quality sessions in the conference, I got the chance to meet other fellow campus ambassadors from different places. I can’t stop mentioning, how amazing the After Party was. It was my first time in Denmark (actually Europe) and I really had an experience of a lifetime.

  After returning from DockerCon EU, I started sharing my experience with my school community as well as the local Docker community in Kathmandu. I took courses online and I joined a company in Nepal and started working as a Devops (also Developer) in the company. There, we organized 2 week long workshops and seminars. Recently, I started my own company in Kathmandu where we use Docker for every single projects both in development and production. I have been advocating about Docker and the communities behind it in different events and workshops in Nepal. I believe that, DockerCon EU 2017 was a life changing moment of my life and I have no complains.

  Ever since Microsoft CVP Erin Chapelle spoke about the future of Windows Containers at DockerCon earlier this year, there has been excitement around the general availability of Windows Server 2019. That announcement came last week at the Microsoft Ignite Conference in Orlando.

  Ignite was a tremendous opportunity for us to discuss the containerization journey with companies of all shapes and sizes. A central theme: what to do with large numbers of applications running today on Windows Server 2008, an operating system that will reach the end of its supported lifecycle in a mere 15 months.

  Here are some common questions discussed last week at Ignite:

  Q: What challenges do legacy Windows Server applications present?

  A: Legacy applications have several challenges:

  • Fragile dependencies between the OS, application and other components
  • Lost knowledge when original development teams move on.
  • The stickiness of legacy .NET applications, with 70 percent of .NET apps still running on Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

  Q: Are Docker containers only a public cloud technology?

  A: Containers are the fastest growing cloud enabling technology, and are often used to enable cloud migration initiatives. Jabil Circuit, GE Digital and Lindsay Corporation are among many customers that have used containers and Docker Enterprise, our container platform, to transition workloads to the Microsoft Azure Cloud. However, containers are are portable from on-premises to the cloud and for hybrid cloud deployments. Containerizing on-premises workloads today is a great way to migrate off of Windows Server 2003/2008 and onto Windows Server 2016/2019 environments anywhere.

  Q: Can I run .NET Framework workloads on Kubernetes?

  A: Windows Server Containers are currently a beta feature in the Kubernetes project. But even  with the release of Windows Server 2019 and Windows worker node support in Kubernetes v1.13, Windows Server support in Kubernetes will be limited to Windows Server 2019. Windows user authentication could also be a challenge with Kubernetes, especially for legacy applications that use Integrated Windows Authentication (IWA).

  Docker Enterprise ships today with both Kubernetes and Docker Swarm integrated into the platform. Swarm, which has supported Windows Server worker nodes for nearly 18 months. When Kubernetes releases support for Windows containers, we’ll support it in production on Docker Enterprise. We demonstrated Windows support at DockerCon San Francisco earlier this year..

  Q: Are containers a better approach for Windows Server 2008 applications than lifting and shifting VMs to Azure?

  A: Lifting and shifting a virtual machine from on-premises to Azure may provide additional security updates for a few years, but it kicks the can down the road.

  The application will still need to be migrated to modern infrastructure, and paying for an entire public cloud virtual machine for a single application is a significant interim cost, plus the time to migrate, refactor and rehost the app — a process that has to be repeated every few years. Migrating an application to a Windows Server Container with Docker Enterprise is the last migration that app will ever require.

  In 2018, why are we still talking about legacy Windows applications? Why are we holding onto Windows Servers that are a decade old? The simple answer — the applications on those servers still work, and they still serve a business purpose. But they can become a significant liability.

  Many of our customers are containerizing legacy Windows 2003 and 2008 applications today with Docker Enterprise, making them portable to new Windows Server platforms and the cloud with no code changes. These three examples — Jabil Circuit, a bank, and GE Digital, showcase the depth of what you can do with Docker Enterprise to modernize legacy Windows applications.

  Jabil Modernizes Legacy Windows Apps for Cloud Migration

  Jabil, one of world’s most technologically advanced manufacturing solution providers with over 100 sites in 29 countries, has embarked on a digital journey to modernize their technology infrastructure. They have a “cloud-first” strategy that requires modernizing over 100 legacy .NET and Java applications, many of which are running on Windows 2008 and 2012.

  They’ve deployed Docker Enterprise and windows containers to successfully migrate the applications from legacy Windows servers to Windows Server 2016 on Microsoft Azure cloud. Now that the first phase is complete, Jabil has expanded the project to modernize additional applications, including factory floor monitoring systems.

  European Bank Consolidates Windows & Linux VM Footprint

  Italy’s largest bank had monolithic Windows and Linux applications they wanted to modernize and maintained two separate data centers as mirrors of each other to achieve high availability. This design required excess, cold standby hardware capacity in each data center.

  They identified the first batch of applications to containerize, focusing on Microsoft Windows Server and Linux Java-based stacks. The hybrid management capability in Docker Enterprise was important to the bank to support run a mix of Windows and Linux services. The new design for their PoC with Docker Enterprise lets the bank use the resources in both data centers more efficiently, eliminating waste and delivering cost savings.

  The bank estimates that Docker Enterprise allows them to consolidate and run over 2.5 times more applications per physical server with Docker Enterprise than in the previous virtualized environment. This consolidation benefit delivers the cost savings required to move the project forward.

  GE Digital Accelerates Industrial IoT Solutions to the Edge

  Powered by its Predix Asset Performance Management (APM) platform, GE Digital creates software to manage the entire asset lifecycle—enabling industrial businesses to operate faster, smarter and more efficiently.

  Updating its .NET-based software across diverse customer environments with zero downtime meant long development and test cycles. The company needed a standard way to build, test and distribute software securely and quickly to any customer environment on any infrastructure or cloud without disrupting production.

  Docker Enterprise lets GE Digital containerize existing Windows and Linux applications and deploy them at the edge without worrying about customer compatibility issues.   The coming end-of-support for Windows Server 2008 is the perfect opportunity for IT organizations to tap Docker Enterprise to modernize and secure legacy applications while saving millions in the process.

  THE END IS NIGH (FOR WINDOWS SERVER 2008)

  The coming end-of-support for Windows Server 2008 in January 2020 leaves IT organizations with a few viable options: migrate to a supported operating system (OS), rehost in Azure, or pay for an extended support contract (up to 75% of the license fee per year) to receive security updates beyond the cut-off date. The option of doing nothing (running applications on unsupported OS versions) is a non-starter for the vast majority of businesses, as this poses a significant security and compliance risk. We saw the impact of this last year when a massive ransomware attack that affected nearly 100 countries spread by targeting end-of-life and unpatched systems.

  A few weeks back, we announced changes to extend the maintenance lifecycle for Docker Engine – Community (CE). As part of these changes, we’re having a beta testing period to deliver a higher-quality engine to the market.

  We’d like to invite our community members to now participate in this beta testing by installing the beta package, kicking the tires, and submitting issues.

   

  Docker Engine – Community version 18.09 adds these new features:

  • Built on containerd – Docker Engine’s new architecture is based on containerd 1.2 and fully supported through the Kubernetes containerd integration.
  • BuildKit is now generally available – Access improved build performance (see slides 22-26) and scalability with the optional BuildKit integration. BuildKit remains opt-in with an environment variable, e.g.

          $ DOCKER_BUILDKIT=1 docker build .

  You can also set the feature option in /etc/docker/daemon.json to enable BuildKit by default:

   {"features":{"buildkit": true}}

  • Support for SSH connections to the docker host – The client can now connect to a remote docker daemon via SSH, e.g.

          $ docker -H ssh://[email protected]

  Last week, the Docker team had a chance to interact with the attendees of VMworld to talk about containers and container platforms. We spoke to companies in all stages of their containerization journey – some were just getting started and figuring out where containers may be used, others had started early containerization projects, some had mature container environments. Here are some of the most common questions we were asked.

  Q: We have developers that are using Docker containers now, but what is the relevancy of containers to me (as an IT or virtualization admin)?

  A: While developers were the first to adopt containers, there are many benefits of containers for IT:

  • Server consolidation: While virtualization did increase the number of virtual machines per server, studies show that servers are still greatly underutilized. On average, Docker Enterprise customers see 50% greater server consolidation with containerization. That means being able to pack more workloads onto existing infrastructure or even reducing the number of servers and therefore saving on licensing and hardware costs.
  • Easier patching and maintenance: Containerized applications can be updated easily through changes to the source image file. This also means it’s possible to update and rollback patches on the fly.
  • Faster cloud migration: Many IT organizations are responsible for consolidating data center and migrating a target number of applications to the public cloud. Containerized applications can be easily deployed to different infrastructure platforms in a consistent manner.
  • Increased application security: Containers provide an additional layer of isolation to applications while also reducing the attack surface. Many companies see additional security as a key benefit to containerization.

  Q: What is the difference between running Docker containers and using a container platform like Docker Enterprise?

  A: In an analogy to the VMware world, virtualization is a technology but vSphere/vCenter is a way to manage virtual machines running on a VMware hypervisor. Containers are a technology and you can run containers on a Docker Engine. However, if you need to manage containers running on Docker Engine, you will need a platform solution that includes things like access controls and LDAP integration, dashboards for managing and monitoring containers, visibility into which containers are running on which hosts, with access to which storage volumes or networks. One way to think about it is to consider Docker Enterprise as the “vCenter” for your containerized applications.

  Q: Can you run Docker Enterprise on your vSphere environment?

  A: Yes! This is a common setup for our customers and we have reference architectures available to help you with this setup. The Docker Enterprise environment consists of a cluster of “nodes”. In a virtualized environment, these nodes are typically virtual machines. This includes the management stack for Docker Enterprise which is deployed as containers running on virtual machines.

  Q: When running Docker Enterprise on vSphere, which tool does what? For example, do you manage the virtualized hosts through Docker Enterprise? 

  A: Docker Enterprise and vSphere control different levels of the infrastructure. Typically, you will still manage virtual machines and the hypervisor through vSphere, but you will manage the container environment and the Docker Engines in your cluster (in the virtual machine) through Docker Enterprise. Docker Enterprise also includes an advanced private registry solution for managing your container images.

  Q: What is the importance of a secure container registry?

  A: With containers, there is a close relationship between container images (the blueprint to your applications) and running containers. The image files (also known as Dockerfiles) are the source of the running applications and therefore, need to be closely managed. That means knowing where the images came from, who has had access to it, if they are free of vulnerabilities and if they’re safe to deploy. Docker Trusted Registry, which is part of Docker Enterprise, is the most advanced container registry solution in the market and comes with integrated image signing, image vulnerability scanning, and policy-based image promotions for a secure software supply chain.

  With 20,000 partners and attendees converging at VMworld in Las Vegas this week, we often get asked if containers are replacing virtual machines (VMs). Many of our Docker Enterprise customers do run their containers on virtualized infrastructure while others run it on bare metal. Docker provides IT and operators choice on where to run their applications – in a virtual machine, on bare metal, or in the cloud. In this blog we’ll provide a few thoughts on the relationship between VMs and containers.

  

  Containers versus Virtual Machines

  Point #1: Containers Are More Agile than VMs

  At this stage of container maturity, there is very little doubt that containers give both developers and operators more agility. Containers deploy quickly, deliver immutable infrastructure and solve the age-old “works on my machine” problem. They also replace the traditional patching process, allowing organizations to respond to issues faster and making applications easier to maintain.

  Point #2: Containers Enable Hybrid and Multi-Cloud Adoption

  Once containerized, applications can be deployed on any infrastructure – on virtual machines, on bare metal, and on various public clouds running different hypervisors. Many organizations start with running containers on their virtualized infrastructure and find it easier to then migrate to the cloud without having to change code.

  Point #3: Integrate Containers with Your Existing IT Processes

  Most enterprise organizations have a mature virtualization environment which includes tooling around backups, monitoring, and automation, and people and processes that have been built around it. By running Docker Enterprise on virtualized infrastructure, organizations can easily integrate containers into their existing practices and get the benefits of points 1 and 2 above.

  

  Running Containers Inside Virtual Machines

  Point #4: Containers Save on VM Licensing

  Containerized applications share common operating system and software libraries which greatly improves CPU utilization within a VM. This means an organization can reduce the overall number of virtual machines needed to operate their environment and increase the number of applications that can run on a server. Docker Enterprise customers often see 50% increased server consolidation after containerizing which means less hardware costs and savings on VM and OS licensing.

  What About Bare Metal?

  Just as organizations have reasons for using different servers or different operating systems, there are reasons that some organizations will want to run containers directly on bare metal. This is often due to performance or latency concerns or for licensing and cost reasons.

  What About Security?

  Containers are inherently secure on their own. Docker containers create isolation layers between applications and between the application and host and reduce the host surface area which protects both the host and the co-located containers by restricting access to the host. Docker containers running on bare-metal have the same high-level restrictions applied to them as they would if running on virtual machines. But Docker containers also pair well with virtualization technologies by protecting the virtual machine itself and providing defense in-depth for the host.

  And the Winner Is…

  In the end, Docker containers can run inside a virtual machine or on bare metal – the choice is up to you. Just like every other decision in the data center, the path you want to go down should align to your business priorities. Containers work well with virtual machines, but they can also run without them.

  In our group, we have developed an analytics-driven product portfolio to enable company-wide digital transformation for our customers. Challenges ranging from predicting the failures of mission-critical industrial assets such as gas turbines to optimizing the conditions of an Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) to increase production, which require building and maintaining sophisticated analytics at scale.

  We face two major challenges in delivering advanced analytics:

  1. Data silos
     We must handle a multitude of data sources that range from disconnected historical datasets to high speed sensor streams. Industrial data volumes and velocities dwarf even the largest ERP implementations as shown below.

  Analytics silos
  Analytics silos consist of complex analytics written over several decades in multiple programming languages (polyglot) and runtime environments. The need to orchestrate these analytics to work together to produce a valuable outcome makes the challenge doubly hard.

   

  Our approach to solving the hardest problems facing the industrial world: combine the power of domain expertise with modern deep learning/machine learning/probabilistic techniques and scalable software practices.

  At BHGE, we have developed innovative solutions to accelerate software development in a scalable and sustainable way. The top two questions that our developers in the industrial world face are: How can we make software development easier? How can we make software that can be built, ship, and run on Mac, Windows, Linux, on-prem, and on any cloud platform?

  Docker allows us to break down silos, reduce complexities, encapsulate dependencies, accelerate development, and scale at will. We use Docker for everything from building to testing and deploying software. Other than a few specialized cases, we find very little reason to run anything outside of Docker.

  We gave a live talk as part of the Transformational Stories track at DockerCon 2018, titled “Depend on Docker” where we discussed our journey to accelerate ideas to production software.

  In our talk, we cover use cases that need a polyglot infrastructure with highly diverse groups from scientists, aerospace and petroleum engineers to software architects to co-create a production application (you can watch the video or see the slides).

  For us, a project qualifies as “depend-on-docker” if the only “external” dependency it needs to go from source to running software is Docker. In the spirit of DockerCon, at the talk we demonstrated and open-sourced our depend-on-docker project, and showed examples of some projects that follow the “depend-on-docker” philosophy, such as semtk, tree and enigma (follow the links to our Github pages).

  In addition to its ease of use, we have made starting your own depend-on-docker project on Linux or Windows really simple. We hope that after you take a look at our GitHub or watch our DockerCon video you will be inspired to build anything you can imagine and convinced that the only external dependency you need is Docker!

  An Update on the Docker FIPS 140-2 Compliance Initiative

  Last year, we announced our pursuit of FIPS 140-2 validation of the Docker Enterprise container platform. This meant starting with the included cryptography components at the Docker Engine foundation to better address the rigorous security requirements of government agencies and others in regulated industries. Over the last year, we’ve progressed through the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP), from “Implementation Under Test” to “Module In Process” and are nearing full completion of validation. Track our progress online at NIST’s CMVP website and as of this post, we are “Module In Process, Coordination”. We are anticipating full validation of Docker Engine – Enterprise in the coming months.

  Recently Docker Engine – Enterprise version 18.03 was released, our first to include the FIPS 140-2 compliant modules currently undergoing validation by the NIST CMVP. These modules cover the cryptography elements in Docker Engine – Enterprise and are used when Engines are deployed standalone or with Docker Swarm enabled.

  Compliance from Docker Engine to Container Platform

  Additionally we are working to bring the FIPS 140-2 compliant modules into the remainder of the Docker Enterprise container platform and make this available to our customers. This will include FIPS 140-2 compliance for the private registry and management control plane, in addition to the integrated Kubernetes orchestration system. Furthermore, these components will also undergo FIPS 140-2 validation via the NIST CMVP, and you can learn more in a few months.

  In the interim, Docker Engine – Enterprise 18.03, which includes the FIPS 140-2 compliant modules, can be deployed into your own environments and provides a great foundation on which to begin your containerization journey – safely and securely.

  Over the last decade, the popularity of microservices and highly-scalable systems has increased, leading to an overall increase in the complexity of applications that are now distributed heavily across the network with many moving pieces and potential failure modes.

  This architectural evolution has changed the monitoring requirements and led to a need for scalable and insightful tooling and practices to enable us to better identify, debug and resolve issues in our systems before they impact the business and our end users (internal and/or external).

  

  I recently gave a talk at DockerCon SF 18 discussing functionality in Docker Enterprise that enables operators to more easily monitor their container platform environment, along with some key metrics and best practices to triage and remediate issues before they cause downtime.

  Monitoring Methodologies

  One of the most well-known early monitoring techniques was the USE method from Brendan Gregg at Netflix. USE specified that for every resource we should be monitoring utilization (time spent servicing work), saturation (the degree to which a resource had work it couldn’t service) and errors (number of error events). This model worked well for more hardware / node centric metrics but network-based applications required a tweaked model.

  One of the most popular models for more network-orientated cloud-native apps is the ‘4 Golden Signals’ (Latency, Traffic, Errors & Saturation) as called out in the Google SRE Handbook. These monitoring methods are useful at the application and platform level, but still lack some of the detail we need to triage complex scenarios & failures.

  Application and Platform Observability

  Observability goes a step further than simple metrics and is the measure of how well we can infer the state of our systems by reviewing their outputs. Observability comprises monitoring, logging (events), tracing and alerting to build a full picture of the state of the system. For our applications to be ‘observable’ it’s important to instrument them so that we can pull out key information and analyze it. Recent years have seen a tooling renaissance in this area with the likes of DataDog, Instana, Prometheus, Sumo Logic and many others catering the increased need for advanced functionality in these areas.

  Observability in Docker Enterprise

  The Docker Enterprise container platform has a number of features built-in to enable easier monitoring and metric measurement. A couple of really useful ones are health checks, engine metrics and logs:

  Health checks: Health checks are built into the Dockerfile specification and allow users to write monitoring checks against their applications. This information is reported through the engine and up through the Docker Enterprise web admin UI. Docker Enterprise will automatically reschedule workloads that fail health checks.

  Engine metrics: The Docker Engine – Enterprise exposes an endpoint that emits Prometheus-formatted metrics data for easy integration into monitoring tooling. There are hundreds of individual metrics available, including data about builds, Swarm status (to detect when leaders are down, loss of quorum etc…), daemon events (e.g. network creation) and many more.

  Logging: Docker Enterprise has built-in support for a number of different logging drivers, including the ability to tag services with metadata to make querying easier once the logs are shipped to an aggregator.

  Observability of Docker @ Docker

  Our infrastructure team run Docker Hub & Store in the cloud and see an incredible amount of traffic running through the platform, with over one billion image pulls every two weeks.  Below are some of the stats across our production environmen

  

  This all runs on the Docker Enterprise platform and utilizes many of the tools and techniques outlined above.
