In this post, we will also demo installing Prometheus and configuring Alertmanager to send emails when alerts are fired, but in a much simpler way – using Rancher all the way through. We’ll see how easy it is to accomplish this without the dependencies used in previous article. We won’t need: a dedicated box configured to run kubectl pointing to Kubernetes cluster knowledge of kubectl as we can do everything using Rancher’s UI helm binary installed/configured Prerequisites for the Demo A Google Cloud Platform account (the free tier is sufficient).

Ever since Rancher 1.0 shipped in 2016, Rancher has provided a central control plane for managing multiple clusters. As pioneers of Kubernetes multi-cluster management, we have seen firsthand how users have consistently increased the number of clusters under management. Examples include: Exploits of unpatched and new vulnerabilities Insecure configurations Leaked or weak credentials Insider threats Even with processes in place for vulnerability scanning and implementing pod security policies and network policies in Rancher, not every risk will be addressed.   Introduction Prometheus is an open-source system for monitoring and alerting originally developed by Soundcloud. It moved to Cloud Native Computing Federation (CNCF) in 2016 and became one of the most popular projects after Kubernetes. It can monitor everything from an entire Linux server to a stand-alone web server, a database service or a single process. In Prometheus terminology, the things it monitors are called Targets.
