  IoT産業の数十億ドル規模の将来性を見込んで、関連するハードウェア、ソフトウェア、およびソリューションが急増するなか、各ベンダーは開発から市場投入までの時間を早めようと苦悩しています。製品の市場への投入段階、あるいは最悪の場合投入後の問題を回避するためには、開発段階で最初から適切なインフラを選ぶなど、正しい選択をすることがより一層重要になります。 市場投入までの時間を短縮する一つの方法は、最初から正しいオペレーティングシステム（OS）を選択することです。これにより、製品を保守可能、かつ拡張可能、そしてなによりセキュアにします。Eclipseの『IoT Developer Survey 2018』（IoT開発者調査2018）によると、LinuxベースのOSが現在もIoTエコシステムで最もよく使われており、RaspbianとUbuntu/Ubuntu Coreがトップシェアを占めています。 商用IoTゲートウェイメーカーのRigadoは、自社のハードウェアの製造においてこのOS選択の問題に直面しました。当初はオープンソースのLinux OSであるYoctoを採用しましたがすぐに、これでは顧客がOS、セキュリティ、その他の更新の保守に莫大な時間を費やさなければならないことが判明しました。これは多くのRigadoの顧客にとって重要な事業目的の妨げとなるものでした。 そこでRigadoは、Ubuntu Core、Snap、およびCanonicalのプライベートブランドストアに切り替えることで、顧客の悩みを取り除くことにしました。Ubuntu CoreとSnapに関して、Rigado CEOのBen Corrado氏は次のように述べています。「コンテナ化された技術を用いて知的財産を保護するソリューションがすでに用意されています。Rigadoは、Canonicalとの関係を通じて、セキュアでシームレスかつ管理された更新を提供できます。」 Rigadoは、顧客によるゲートウェイインフラ技術の選び方に変化をもたらすことで、製品の市場投入までの時間が短縮されることを理解しました。顧客はRigadoのCascadeプラットフォームを使用することで、3～6か月でコンセプトから本稼働まで移行し、開発時間および市場投入までの時間を最大で1年早めることができます。 固定機能のゲートウェイからパッケージベースの集中管理ソリューションへのシフトがRigadoのビジネスにもたらした提供は、顧客にとって非常に重要です。「文書化された体系的なプロセスであることで、私たちは一つの顧客を通じて得た経験をすべての顧客に展開することができ、その結果、顧客は迅速に現場へと展開することが可能となるのです」とCorrado氏は述べています。 RigadoがUbuntu CoreとSnapにより市場投入までの時間をどのように短縮したのか、以下のビデオでCorrado氏のインタビュー全文をご覧いただけます。
