What is an aws region & availability zone?

A Region.
This is a geographic region.

An Availability Zone.
Each region has two or more availability zones, these are isolated datacenters. AWS servers called instances & the data can run be placed in multiple availability zones making it highly available.

What does all this provide you with? The answer, High availability.
