What is the difference between systemd rescue mode & emergency mode?



  • Rescue mode.
    Allows you to repair a system that has issues on boot up.

    • It tries to mount all local filesystems.
    • Starts important services.
    • No network interface are activated.
    • No users are allow on.
    • Is same as traditional single user mode.
    • Requires the root password to login.

    Emergency mode.
    Allows to you enter this even if rescue mode does not work.

    • Only mounts the root filesystem, read-only.
    • No network interfaces are activated.
    • Some basic service are started.
    • Requires root password to enter this mode.
