What is the /etc/sysconfig directory used for?

  • SysVinit Based, but more Redhat-like.

Also see: What is the /etc/default directory used for?

/etc/sysconfig directory is similar to /etc/default, in that it set environment settings for system command & services.

Redhat-like seem to use both, in the case of useradd for example, it is not a service that has a daemon, but when you run the command, you without specifying certain options, the default values are taken from /etc/default/useradd

    Bottom line is..
    /etc/default - has a Debian history
    /etc/sysconfig - has a Redhat history.
