What is the /etc/default directory used for?



  • SysVinit Based.

    • When system services start, the respective /etc/default file is sourced.
    • The settings in this directory, as the name of the directory suggests, can be thought of as default environment settings.
    • When a package or software is upgraded the values in the respective file remain the same.
    • The settings in these files should should reflect values you want to keep the same when the package or software is updated.
    • During upgrades if new options are added, most systems will prompt to replace the file and backup up the original file.
